Russia Lacks Military Capability for Major Attack on NATO, Polish Foreign Minister Says

Darwin, September 30: Russia currently lacks sufficient military capability to launch a major attack against NATO because its forces are engaged in the war in Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said.

Sikorski made the remarks in an interview with Polish broadcaster TVP Info on Monday, September 28, according to Anadolu Agency.

“Russia does not have the strength to launch a major attack against NATO. All its forces are engaged in Ukraine,” Sikorski said. However, he warned that Moscow could carry out smaller-scale provocative actions aimed at creating divisions among NATO member states.

Last week, Sikorski said Poland had received information from multiple sources suggesting that Russia was preparing to do “something big” this year. However, he noted that only Russian President Vladimir Putin knew the precise nature of Moscow’s plans.

The Polish foreign minister stressed that NATO must remain vigilant and prevent any provocation from creating divisions within the alliance.

According to Sikorski, Russia could stage an incident that would trigger disagreements between NATO’s European and American members, particularly over whether Article 5 of the alliance’s collective defence treaty should be invoked.

Article 5 states that an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all members, requiring them to assist the country under attack.

“Russia could carry out on a larger scale the kinds of activities it is conducting now,” Sikorski said.

Western countries have long accused Russia of engaging in various activities, including sabotage and airspace violations. Western governments have described such actions as part of Moscow’s “hybrid warfare” against NATO and European Union member states.
