Russia Set to Provide Iran with $1 Billion Loan

Darwin, October 07: Russia has finalized preparations to provide Iran with a $1 billion loan. The funds will be transferred once Tehran provides the necessary bank account details. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported the development on Tuesday (October 6).

According to the report, although the process for disbursing the loan has been finalized, there is disagreement among various Iranian government agencies over how the funds should be used. As a result, the transfer has been put on hold.

Fars reported that news of the loan was first disclosed in June. The $1 billion is being considered the first installment of a planned $20 billion loan from Russia to Iran.

According to the report, Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization wants to use the loan to import vehicles. The Oil Ministry, meanwhile, wants to spend the funds on purchasing equipment needed by the oil industry. The Agriculture Ministry has proposed allocating the money for imports of essential goods.

However, no final decision has yet been made on how the funds will be used. As a result, the Iranian government has not yet provided Russia with the bank account details required to transfer the money.

Meanwhile, Iran and Russia are seeking to deepen their economic and financial ties, including by increasing the use of their national currencies in bilateral trade and reducing their dependence on Western-controlled financial systems.

In June, Iran announced plans to establish a ruble-based trade board as part of efforts to strengthen banking and currency cooperation with Russia. At the time, an Iranian lawmaker said Moscow could provide Tehran with a $20 billion ruble-denominated loan, potentially carrying an annual interest rate of 6 percent.

The United States has imposed extensive sanctions on Iran, targeting areas including its oil exports, banking sector and access to the international financial system. Washington has intensified economic pressure on Tehran in recent months and has also imposed sanctions on foreign entities accused of facilitating transactions with Iran.

In September, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Russia’s VTB Bank. Washington accused the bank of maintaining correspondent banking relationships with Iranian financial institutions under sanctions. The United States has also taken action against various financial networks over allegations that they helped Iran transfer funds and evade sanctions.
