Darwin, October 20: US President Donald Trump has warned that protests and violence similar to those in France could spread across the United States if Democrats win the election. He made the remarks on Monday (October 19, local time) while campaigning for Republican Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas. The president also made anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim remarks, Reuters reported.
The rally was part of Trump’s recent campaign efforts to shore up support for Republican candidates amid voter dissatisfaction over the war with Iran and rising prices of everyday goods. Marshall’s Senate seat in Kansas, traditionally a Republican stronghold, has become increasingly competitive this election cycle.
At the rally, Trump said, “Kansas, I love you. But I’m here for a man named Roger Marshall.”
In his campaign speech, Trump once again brought up recent unrest in France. He claimed that a similar situation could develop in the United States if Republicans failed to win.
France has witnessed large-scale protests in recent days over the rising cost of living and disruptions to public services caused by insufficient funding. The demonstrations eventually escalated into violence and looting. The unrest is being viewed as among the country’s most severe episodes of instability in several years.
Trump is also struggling to keep the cost of goods and services affordable for ordinary Americans. Nevertheless, he told the rally, “We’re not going to let this country face that kind of situation. When you see church steeples burning in France, when you see fires everywhere, remember that radical Democrats want the same thing for America.”
Trump mockingly referred to Democrats as “Dumocrats.” Activists have long criticized his remarks targeting immigrants and ethnic minorities. According to civil rights organizations, such statements normalize discriminatory attitudes toward these communities.
Trump won Kansas by a 16-percentage-point margin in the 2024 presidential election. No Democratic candidate has won a US Senate election in the conservative state in the past 94 years.
However, first-term Senator Roger Marshall is facing a tough challenge from Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton, a pastor at a Methodist megachurch. Hamilton has opposed Trump’s tariff policies and described the president’s leadership as erratic.
Speaking about Hamilton, Trump said, “He wants you to feel sorry for being born white.”
At the rally, Marshall also emphasized cultural issues, including the need to counter what he called “radical Islam.” He described Hamilton as “too liberal” for Kansas because of his support for gay rights and Pride parades.
Marshall said, “We need someone who knows how to handle cows and bulls.”
The Kansas race signals a major challenge for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The party faces political headwinds as it seeks to retain its majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
