Darwin, October 28: A Hindu barber and shopkeeper, Rabindra Rishi, 43, was stabbed to death in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh, reportedly over a longstanding dispute. He sought refuge in the alleged attacker’s father’s shop while trying to save his life, but was ultimately killed. The incident took place on Tuesday (October 27) evening at Noman Composite Muktijoddha Market near Jamirdia Mor in Habirbari Union.
Rabindra was the son of Ranjit Rishi and a resident of Uttarpara in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh. He ran a barbershop while living in a rented house owned by Kashem Mia in the Jamirdia Tarif Munshi Mor area of Bhaluka.
According to local sources and eyewitnesses, Saddam Hossain, the son of Babul Mia and a resident of the same area, went to Rabindra’s barbershop on Tuesday evening and stabbed him.
In an attempt to escape the attack, Rabindra ran out of the shop and took shelter in a shop owned by Saddam’s father. However, he was attacked again there. He then tried to flee to a nearby house, but the assailant stabbed him once more in the courtyard. Rabindra eventually died at the scene from excessive blood loss.
Members of the victim’s family said an old dispute may have been behind the killing. They alleged that a local mediation meeting had been held about three months earlier over accusations that Saddam had harassed Rabindra’s daughter. The family suspects the attack may have been linked to that incident.
Rabindra’s wife, Suchitra, alleged that Saddam frequently took money from her husband to buy drugs. She also claimed that he often received haircuts at the shop without paying. A recent dispute reportedly arose over unpaid bills and Rabindra’s refusal to cut Saddam’s hair.
Suchitra further alleged that Saddam had previously threatened to kill her husband. She believes these disputes led to Rabindra’s fatal stabbing.
After receiving reports of the incident, police from Bhaluka Model Police Station visited the scene and recovered the body. It was subsequently sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, Mohammad Zahidul Islam, confirmed the incident and said legal proceedings were underway.
