Rubio Announces End of War with Iran at Press Briefing

Rubio

Darwin, 06 May :— U.S. Secretary of State has announced that the American military campaign in Iran, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” has officially concluded, claiming that Washington has achieved its primary objectives.

Speaking at a rare appearance in the White House press briefing room, Rubio said the United States is now shifting focus to a new, limited mission called “Project Freedom,” aimed at ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the strategically vital .

Rubio described the new operation as “defensive in nature” and separate from the broader war effort. “Operation Epic Fury has ended. We have accomplished our goals. We do not seek further conflict—we seek peace. The President wants a deal,” he told reporters.

The briefing was notable as Rubio temporarily stepped in for White House Press Secretary , who is currently on maternity leave—an unusual move for a sitting Secretary of State.

Political Pressure and Legal Debate

Rubio’s remarks come amid growing criticism from members of Congress, who argue that President may have violated the .

Under the law, the president can authorize military action for up to 60 days without formal congressional approval. The U.S.-Israel joint offensive in Iran reportedly began on February 28, with Congress formally notified 48 hours later—triggering the 60-day countdown, which expired on May 1.

To avoid breaching the legal limit, the White House declared last Friday that all hostile activities under Operation Epic Fury had ceased.

Shift to ‘Project Freedom’

Rubio reiterated that message during Tuesday’s briefing, emphasizing that “Project Freedom” is a smaller-scale mission focused on maritime security rather than active combat.

He stated that U.S. forces would not engage militarily unless directly attacked and stressed that the mission’s purpose is to stabilize the region and facilitate safe navigation.

Rubio also claimed that 10 civilian sailors were killed during the broader operation, though he did not provide further details. He added that the new initiative aims to assist approximately 23,000 people from 87 countries who remain stranded across the Gulf region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical transit chokepoints, and any disruption there has significant implications for global energy markets.
