Darwin, 13 June: Host nation United States began their World Cup campaign in historic fashion, delivering a dominant performance at the SoFi Stadium in California to thrash Paraguay 4–1.
The USA, co-hosting a World Cup on home soil for the first time since 1994, showcased aggressive and commanding football from the opening whistle. A brace from Folarin Balogun, a goal from Giovanni Reyna, and an own goal secured a convincing victory for the hosts.
From the very start, the United States applied pressure. They went ahead as early as the 7th minute through an own goal, created from a Christian Pulisic-driven attack. Balogun doubled the lead in the 31st minute before striking again in first-half stoppage time, sending the USA into the break with a commanding 3–0 lead.
That first-half dominance marked the biggest halftime margin in US World Cup history. Paraguay struggled to cope with the high tempo and attacking intensity throughout the match.
Although the USA lost some rhythm in the second half, Giovanni Reyna added a fourth goal with a composed finish inside the box. Paraguay managed a consolation goal in the 73rd minute through Mauricio Prado.
A major talking point was the condition of Christian Pulisic, who played a key role in two goals during the first half before being substituted at halftime. There was no immediate confirmation regarding a possible injury.
Under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the United States looked sharp, structured, and highly attacking—sending a strong message with a statement opening win.
