Darwin, 14 June : Australia made a brilliant start to their World Cup campaign, defeating Türkiye 2–0 in a Group D clash at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Sunday. The result spoiled Türkiye’s long-awaited return to the World Cup after 24 years.

Despite Türkiye dominating possession and creating more chances, they failed to find the net, while Australia made the most of their opportunities with clinical finishing.

Türkiye controlled 63% of possession and attempted 28 shots, including seven on target. However, they were unable to break through a disciplined Australian defence, where goalkeeper Patrick Beach delivered an outstanding performance.

Australia, despite spending much of the match under pressure, struck first in the 27th minute. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring from a cross by Paul O’Con-Ingstaler, marking a dream World Cup debut for the young forward.

The Socceroos maintained their lead into the second half and doubled their advantage in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe found the back of the net to make it 2–0, effectively sealing the game.

Türkiye continued to press but failed to respond, as Australia’s pace and defensive organisation proved too strong.

With all four teams in Group D having played their opening matches, the United States sit top of the table after a commanding win over Paraguay. Australia are second on goal difference, while Türkiye are third and Paraguay remain bottom.

Australia now share three points with the USA, setting up an exciting early battle for qualification from the group stage.
