Decision made to ease sanctions and release Iranian assets: Araghchi

Darwin, 22 June : Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has claimed “significant progress” in ongoing talks with the United States, stating that several economic sanctions on Iran are now in the process of being eased.

In a post on X on Monday, Araghchi said that restrictions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical exports have been lifted as a result of the negotiations. He also noted that broader economic sanctions have begun to ease.

According to AFP, Araghchi further stated that “a portion of Iran’s frozen assets held abroad has already been released,” and that a major plan aimed at reconstruction and development in Iran has also begun implementation.

Sources involved in the mediation process, including Qatar and Pakistan, said that following the initial round of talks held at a resort in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, technical-level discussions are now underway and are expected to continue throughout the week.

Previously, a memorandum of understanding was signed last Wednesday to extend a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran by another 60 days. To advance implementation, U.S. Vice President JD Vance began discussions with Iranian representatives on Sunday, which concluded early Monday.

Overall, while the diplomatic efforts show some progress, officials believe a final resolution will still take time.
