UN to evacuate 11,000 sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz

Darwin, 24 June : Due to the ongoing United States–Iran conflict, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), an agency of the United Nations, has taken an initiative to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez reportedly shared this information on Tuesday (June 23), according to a report by the U.S. media outlet Axios.

The IMO Secretary-General said, “So far, 14 sailors have died in the ongoing conflict. A large-scale rescue and relocation operation is being prepared with the cooperation of the United States, Iran, Oman, and other relevant parties.”

According to the organization, around 600 ships are currently stuck in and around the Strait of Hormuz, severely disrupting global energy and trade transport.

Dominguez said, “This situation has shown how much the ongoing conflict has disrupted operations in one of the world’s most important sea routes, the Strait of Hormuz, leaving thousands of civilian sailors stranded for a long time.”

Meanwhile, during a visit to the United Arab Emirates, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway. No country has the right to impose tolls or fees here.”

He also said, “Ensuring freedom of navigation is the responsibility of the international community.”

Maritime expert Captain Kees Bakens said that several vessels, including oil tankers, have already started crossing the Strait of Hormuz again. He noted that the situation is showing signs of stabilization due to coordinated security guidance from the Omani government.

However, he warned, “Potential mines and security risks in the strait have not yet been fully eliminated.”

The United Nations has stated that necessary security assurances for safe navigation have been verified before the rescue operation, and coordination with relevant parties is ongoing.
