Henry Recalls an Old Memory After Seeing Messi Break Down in Tears

Sports Desk : Lionel Messi’s tears after Argentina’s dramatic victory over Egypt served as another reminder of his remarkable mental strength. Despite trailing 2-0, Argentina staged an incredible comeback to win 3-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals. After the match, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Thierry Henry shared a memorable story about the Argentine captain.

It was far from an ideal start for Messi. He missed a penalty and looked unusually quiet for much of the game. However, the Argentine captain came alive in the final 15 minutes. He first provided the assist for Cristian Romero’s goal before scoring the equalizer himself to bring Argentina back into the match. Enzo Fernández then netted the winner, completing an extraordinary comeback.

Unable to hold back his emotions after the final whistle, the 39-year-old Messi broke down in tears. The emotional moment reminded Henry of their days together at Barcelona.

Speaking as a pundit on Fox Soccer, the French legend said, “Never make Leo angry. I saw it in training. If a coach didn’t award him a foul, he would suddenly change. The look in his eyes would be different, and then he’d score three goals in a row, win the ball back, and score again. Afterward, he’d simply say, ‘Next time, give me the foul.'”

According to Henry, Messi’s greatest strength is not just his extraordinary talent but also his ability to become even more dangerous in adversity. The way he put the disappointment of his missed penalty behind him and inspired Argentina to a remarkable comeback once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history.
