Global Oil Prices Fall Sharply Following Trump’s Announcement

Darwin, 03 August: Global oil prices dropped by more than 4% after diplomatic developments in the Middle East eased concerns over the possibility of war, CNBC reported.

During Asian trading on Monday (August 3), U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 4.5% to $80.89 per barrel, while Brent crude declined 4.4% to $84.10 per barrel.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a planned military strike on Iran had been temporarily suspended. He said the decision was made following requests from Iran and several countries in the Middle East.

In a post on social media, Trump said that the parties had reached an understanding on the framework of a possible agreement. The proposed deal includes the full and immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a resolution to issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Nearly 20% of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies pass through the waterway, making the region highly influential in global energy markets. As a result, military tensions in the area typically push oil prices higher.

Oil markets have remained volatile since February 28 due to ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Concerns intensified after reports emerged that a new U.S. military strike on Iran was being considered.

However, following Trump’s announcement that the planned attack had been put on hold, investors appeared reassured, reducing the geopolitical risk premium that had been supporting higher oil prices.

Meanwhile, Iran responded cautiously to Trump’s remarks. Acting Defense Minister Seyed Majid Ibn al-Reza said that Tehran is taking U.S. threats seriously.
