Record 51,000 Immigrants Detained in a Single Month in U.S. History

Darwin, 08 August : U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained nearly 51,000 people last month as the Trump administration intensified its nationwide immigration enforcement campaign, according to ICE data and reports by U.S. media.

The figure represents the highest number of monthly detentions in the agency’s history. ICE detained an average of roughly 1,645 people per day last month. The previous monthly record was set in June, when approximately 43,000 people were detained, meaning that the agency has broken its monthly record for two consecutive months.

Since returning to the White House for a second term, President Donald Trump has significantly expanded immigration enforcement efforts across the United States. His administration has directed federal agencies to increase operations aimed at identifying and deporting people living in the country without legal immigration status.

Enforcement operations have intensified in several parts of the country. In Georgia, a targeted immigration operation resulted in the detention of 1,226 people. More than 30 people were also reportedly detained at U.S. airports last month.

Deportations Also Increase

ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have said that deportations have also risen alongside arrests.

In June, DHS reported that 356,389 people had been deported from the United States during the fiscal year up to that point.

The DHS has defended the intensified enforcement campaign as necessary to uphold immigration laws and protect public safety. The department says its primary objective is to remove people it considers threats to public safety while enforcing federal immigration laws.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said that 80 percent of Americans support the administration’s effort to remove criminal undocumented immigrants from their communities.

“We are once again making America safer by removing these criminals,” Mullin said.

Concerns Over Arrests of Non-Criminal Immigrants

The administration’s aggressive immigration campaign has also drawn criticism from immigrant-rights advocates and other groups.

Several reports have indicated that some people detained during recent enforcement operations had no criminal records. In some cases, detainees reportedly had employment authorization or valid parole documents allowing them to remain in the United States.

The reports have raised concerns among immigrant-rights advocates about whether the enforcement campaign is being limited to people with serious criminal records, as the administration has repeatedly emphasized.

Critics argue that broad enforcement operations could affect people who do not pose a public-safety threat and may have legal authorization to work or remain in the country.

Some Trump Supporters Want Even Stronger Enforcement

At the same time, some supporters of the Trump administration’s immigration policies argue that the crackdown should go even further.

Mike Howell, president of the Trump-aligned Oversight Project, said the number of arrests remains below his expectations. He has also called for immigration enforcement to become more prominent in workplaces, arguing that workplace enforcement should be an important component of the administration’s strategy.

The record number of ICE detentions underscores the dramatic expansion of immigration enforcement under Trump’s second administration, while also intensifying the debate over how aggressively federal authorities should enforce immigration laws and where the line should be drawn between targeting criminal offenders and detaining people without criminal histories.
