Darwin, September : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched ballistic missile attacks on a US aircraft carrier and a US Navy destroyer. In a statement issued early Sunday (September 6), the IRGC claimed that both warships were damaged in the attacks and later left the area.
According to the statement published by Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA, the IRGC said it had fired missiles at two US warships.
The IRGC claimed that the two American warships had been pursuing Iranian vessels and were participating in a maritime blockade. It said the warships left the area after sustaining damage in the missile strikes. The IRGC also claimed that US Central Command (CENTCOM) had acknowledged attacks targeting two naval vessels, saying that CENTCOM’s statement confirmed Iran’s operation.
However, according to CENTCOM, Iran had fired ballistic missiles at two US naval vessels conducting patrols in regional waters. The US military said both warships successfully evaded the attacks and that no American personnel were killed or injured.
Earlier on Saturday, the IRGC Navy claimed that it had targeted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three other vessels linked to the United States in another area.
The IRGC said the operations were carried out in retaliation for US attacks on Iranian oil tankers.
Meanwhile, CENTCOM said that following Iran’s missile attacks, US forces had struck three Iranian crude oil tankers.
With the US attack on Iranian warships and the exchange of attacks between the two sides, tensions in the Gulf region are escalating further.
