Darwin, August 14 – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated that Russia has won the ongoing war with Ukraine.
In an interview published Tuesday on the YouTube channel Patriot, Orbán made the comments, according to a report by the Russian media outlet Russian Times on Wednesday.
He claimed:
“We are still talking as if the war is ongoing, but in reality, Ukraine has already lost this war, and Russia has won. The only question now is when and under what conditions the West will admit this reality, and what the consequences will be.”
Ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, Orbán said that such a joint statement has placed the European Union in a “ridiculous and pitiful” position.
He added:
“When two leaders sit down to negotiate, and America and Russia don’t invite you to that conversation, then shouting from outside is useless.”
Further elaborating, he said:
“If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.”
Since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Hungary – despite being a member of the EU and NATO – has consistently taken a different stance from Brussels. Hungary has opposed supplying arms to Ukraine, imposing sanctions on Russia, and the proposals to include Ukraine in the EU or NATO.
A number of ethnic Hungarians live in western Ukraine, and there have been longstanding tensions between Hungary and Ukraine over their treatment.
Recently, these tensions have intensified. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has accused Ukrainian soldiers of killing an ethnic Hungarian individual. He argued that the incident proves Ukraine is not fit to join the EU — and not even fit to be considered part of the “civilized world.”
