Darwin, September 20 — India’s main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, has described the recent defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as a matter of “serious concern” for India’s national security.
The party has also termed the development as yet another failure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personality-driven foreign policy.
According to a report by The Times of India, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the pact in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
In his post, Ramesh said,
“Just a month after the sudden halting of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ President Trump invites Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir to a lunch at the White House — the same Asim Munir whose provocative and communally divisive remarks fueled the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025.”
Ramesh further wrote:
“Only days after our Prime Minister’s much-publicized trip to China, President Xi Jinping opened the doors of China’s secret military complex to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari.
And now, Saudi Arabia — where the Prime Minister was present during the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack — has signed a ‘Strategic Mutual Defense’ agreement with Pakistan.”
At the end of his post, Ramesh stated:
“This is undoubtedly a matter of grave concern for India’s national security. The Indian National Congress expresses its deep anxiety and views this as another major blow to the Prime Minister’s over-hyped personality-driven diplomacy.”
On Wednesday, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia issued a joint statement announcing the strategic mutual defense pact. The agreement aims to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation and commit to joint resistance against any aggression. An attack on one country will be considered an attack on both.
