Australian Olympic swim star Ariarne Titmus retires at 25

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA — Australian swimming icon and four-time Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus has announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 25, telling fans on Thursday that “the time feels right to step away.”

Titmus, who holds the world record in the 200m freestyle, confirmed the decision on Instagram, stating it was a “tough one but one that I’m really happy with.” The star had taken a break following last year’s Paris Olympics and realized that other things in her life were now “just a little bit more important to me than swimming.”

A Decorated Career Ends with 32 International Medals
The retirement marks the end of a dominant career that saw Titmus amass 32 international medals, including an impressive eight Olympic medals.

400m Freestyle Olympic Champion: Victories in both the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Games. 200m Freestyle Olympic Champion: Gold in Tokyo 2021.

4x200m Freestyle Relay: Part of the Australian winning team in Paris 2024.

The announcement comes after Titmus faced significant health challenges, including surgery to remove an ovarian tumour before the Paris Games. She referenced this in her farewell, noting those health issues “really rocked me mentally.”

In a poignant letter shared on social media, addressed to her seven-year-old self, Titmus wrote: “The pursuit was unrelenting and you gave it every skerrick of yourself. You walk away knowing every stone was turned, no regrets. You’re fulfilled, content and happy.”

Tributes immediately flowed for the 25-year-old champion.

American rival Katie Ledecky, whom Titmus famously defeated for the 400m freestyle gold in Paris, responded warmly to the news, calling Titmus an “outstanding competitor, champion and person.”

Fellow Australian Olympic swimmer Mollie O’Callaghan, who won the 200m freestyle gold in Paris in a memorable race against Titmus, congratulated her former teammate on an “amazing career.” After 18 years in the pool, Titmus steps away having solidified her place as one of Australia’s greatest swimming talents.
