Darwin, 31 October-
Prince Andrew, the brother of Britain’s King Charles III, is set to lose his royal title and will have to vacate the historic Royal Lodge at Windsor. The announcement came from Buckingham Palace on Thursday night following weeks of intense criticism over Andrew’s past association with convicted U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to BBC reports, the British government had already advised the King on the matter and expressed full support for the decision to revoke Andrew’s titles.
In an official statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke of York will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Earlier this month, amid growing public backlash, Andrew had voluntarily relinquished several other royal titles, including his Duke of York designation.
Virginia Giuffre’s Allegations and Death
The controversy resurfaced after the recent publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who tragically died by suicide earlier this year. In her writings, Giuffre repeated allegations that she had been forced into sexual encounters with Prince Andrew on three occasions while she was a teenager. Andrew has consistently denied all allegations.
Giuffre’s family released a statement saying, “Through her truth and extraordinary courage, she brought down a British prince.”
Royal Titles and Residence Revoked
Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles has officially initiated the process to strip Prince Andrew of all honors and titles. In addition, a formal notice has been issued to terminate the lease of the Royal Lodge, Andrew’s long-time residence. He will be relocated to the Sandringham Estate, where accommodation will be arranged from the King’s private funds.
Although Andrew maintains his innocence, the Palace described these measures as “necessary” in light of the situation. The statement added that the Royal Household “stands firmly with all victims of abuse.”
Royal Family’s Status Unchanged
Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, will retain their royal titles. Despite the developments, Andrew remains eighth in the line of succession to the British throne. His former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also vacate the Royal Lodge and live independently. Having previously used the title “Duchess of York,” she will revert to her maiden name, Ferguson.
Government and Public Reaction
The British government has voiced its support for the King’s decision. Culture Minister Lisa Nandy stated during the BBC Question Time program:
> “This sends a powerful message—one that stands with victims of sexual abuse and against impunity. The King has taken an important and principled step, and I support it fully.”
Epstein Connection and Continuing Scrutiny
Prince Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein continues to draw public attention, especially following the release of Giuffre’s memoir. Despite his denials, leaked 2011 emails reportedly show that Andrew maintained contact with Epstein even after claiming to have ended their friendship.
Questions have also arisen about Andrew’s lavish lifestyle, as he no longer serves as a working member of the Royal Family yet appears to sustain significant personal expenses.
