“No Barbed Wire Between Us and Bangladesh”: BJP MP’s Comment Triggers Uproar

Darwin, 02 November-

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has sparked political controversy by declaring that if his party wins the upcoming elections, India and Bangladesh will no longer be separated by fences.

Speaking at a BJP organizational meeting in Motiari Banpur, Jagannath Karmakar, the BJP Member of Parliament from Ranaghat, said,

> “I promise, if we win this election, there will be no barbed wire between us and Bangladesh. The two Bengals were once one, and they will be united again.”

According to a report published by Hindustan Times on Sunday, Karmakar’s remarks have caused deep discomfort within the BJP ranks. While the meeting focused on strengthening the party through new memberships, his comments reportedly triggered unease among party leaders.

The controversy stems from the BJP’s longstanding stance on illegal immigration from Bangladesh. The party has often claimed that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) benefits from “illegal entrants” and has made border security a key part of its campaign narrative.

BJP leaders in both Delhi and Kolkata have consistently alleged that demographic changes in West Bengal are the result of large-scale infiltration from across the border, allegedly aided by the TMC government.

In this context, Karmakar’s public statement calling for the removal of the border fence has shocked many within his own party and ignited debate across the state’s political spectrum.

Reacting to the comment, TMC General Secretary Kunal Ghosh said,

> “Jagannath’s statement exposes the BJP’s hypocrisy. On one hand, they talk about stopping infiltration, and on the other, they promise to remove the border fence. The people of Bengal will see through this double standard.”
