Darwin, November 5 — New York has elected Democratic candidate Johnathan “Johan” Mamdani as mayor, making him the city’s first Muslim mayor in its history.
Mamdani’s victory marks a new chapter for a city of over 8.4 million people, a major economic and cultural hub with global significance. The news was reported by Al Jazeera and AP.
Mamdani is also the first South Asian and first African-born individual to hold this leadership position in New York.
He defeated his main competitor, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo has already congratulated Mamdani on his win.
From Brooklyn, BBC reporter Kayla Epstein noted that Mamdani’s office has already started celebrating with a dance party. Supporters have taken to the streets, dancing, singing, and awaiting his victory speech.
On social media platform X, former U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated Mamdani along with all other Democratic winners on Tuesday’s elections.
Prior to the official vote count, data-driven independent U.S. organization Decision Desk HQ had projected Mamdani as the likely winner.
Other key election results across the U.S. on the same night include:
Virginia: Former Democratic Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsom Earl-Sears in the governor’s race. State Senator Ghazala Hashimi also made history by defeating Republican John Reed for the lieutenant governor position.
New Jersey: Democrat Miki Sherill beat Trump-backed Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the governor’s race.
Pennsylvania: Democrat Cory O’Connor won the mayoral race in Pittsburgh.

Massachusetts: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was re-elected for a second term unopposed.
Georgia: Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens secured a second term, maintaining the city’s Democratic stronghold.
Tuesday night’s results highlight the continuing strength of Democrats in major U.S. cities, with Johnathan Mamdani emerging as the new face of this urban leadership legacy in New York City.
