Australia to Ban Social Media for Children Under 16

Darwin, November 6 — Australia will become the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from using major social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.

Under new eSafety Commission rules taking effect on December 10, 2025, nine platforms have been declared “age-restricted,” meaning users under 16 will be prohibited from registering.

The platforms include: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, Kik, YouTube, and BeReal.

Platforms failing to enforce the restriction could face fines of up to A$49.5 million.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said the list is subject to change as new platforms emerge. She warned parents that exclusion from the list does not mean a platform is safe.

Messaging and educational services — such as Messenger, WhatsApp, YouTube Kids, Discord, GitHub, LEGO Play, Roblox, Steam Chat, and Google Classroom — are exempt.

The law aims to safeguard children’s mental health and digital wellbeing by reducing exposure to harmful online content.
