Super Typhoon Fung-wong Slams Philippines: At Least Two Dead, Over a Million Displaced

Super Typhoon Fung-wong (locally named “Uwan”) ravaged the northern Philippines overnight, leaving behind a trail of destruction that officials are only now beginning to assess. The storm, which made landfall in the eastern town of Dinalungan in Aurora province on Sunday night, has killed at least two people and injured two others, according to early Civil Defence reports.

The storm’s fury forced a massive pre-emptive evacuation of more than one million people from flood and landslide-prone areas.

The ferocious winds, heavy rain, and storm swells pummeled the country’s main island of Luzon, destroying houses in areas like Santiago, Isabela province, and felling trees and electric posts.

Aurora Vice-Governor Patrick Alexis Angara confirmed that the sheer force of the storm resulted in at least three towns becoming inaccessible due to landslides and broken roads, halting immediate relief efforts.

Fung-wong is the 21st storm to hit the archipelago this year, arriving immediately after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which tragically killed 224 people in the Philippines last week. As Fung-wong moves over the South China Sea toward Taiwan, a large portion of the country still faces heavy rain and storm swell warnings.
