Death Toll Rises to 16 in Terrorist Attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach

Darwin, 15 December: The death toll from an indiscriminate shooting by gunmen at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has risen to 16. Around 40 others, including police officers, are receiving treatment for serious injuries.

According to a report by the British broadcaster BBC citing police sources, the victims include two police officers and one child.

Authorities have also set up an emergency hotline to allow the public to seek updated information about those affected by the incident.

Meanwhile, one gunman was shot dead at the scene by police, while another was arrested in an injured condition. Police said the condition of the detained suspect is critical.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has declared the incident a terrorist attack.

The BBC reported that at the time of the attack, members of the Jewish community were gathering at the beach to light the first candle of the Hanukkah festival. A 30-year-old eyewitness, Harry Wilson, told the Sydney Morning Herald, “I saw at least 10 people lying on the ground. There was blood everywhere.”

Videos circulating on social media platform X show people at the beach and nearby park fleeing in panic as gunshots ring out. One video shows a man wearing a black shirt firing a large weapon, after which another man in a white T-shirt tackles him and wrests the weapon away.

Another video shows police pinning two individuals to the ground and attempting to revive one of them.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the incident, calling it tragic and distressing. He said, “This attack is a terrorist, antisemitic act of evil. This is a dark moment for our nation. Our police and security agencies are working to identify everyone involved in this attack.”

Gun attacks are relatively rare in Australia, largely due to the National Firearms Agreement introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which is considered one of the strictest gun control laws in the world.

After 35 people were killed by a gunman in Port Arthur, Tasmania, in 1996, the government banned semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns and launched a mandatory gun buyback program, under which around one million firearms were collected and destroyed.

As a result of these laws, mass shootings and firearm-related suicides in Australia declined significantly over the following two decades.

This recent attack is one of the deadliest incidents in Australia in the past three decades and has reignited debate over the enforcement and effectiveness of the country’s strict gun control laws.
