Darwin, 15 December: World leaders have expressed deep sorrow, condemnation, and outrage over the shooting at the crowded Bondi Beach in Sydney, the capital of Australia’s New South Wales state, which left at least 15 people dead.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

He said that on a day that “should have been one of joy,” Australians were targeted in a shooting at the beach.

“This attack is a terrorist, antisemitic act of evil. This is a dark moment for our nation. Our police and security agencies are working to identify everyone involved in this attack,” he said.

Australia’s opposition leader Susan Lee described Sunday night as a time of deep mourning following the attack.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

“Deeply distressing news from Australia. On behalf of the United Kingdom, I extend our condolences and solidarity to all those affected by this horrific attack at Bondi Beach.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon

“Australia and New Zealand are closer than friends — we are family. I am shocked by the deeply distressing news from Bondi Beach in Australia. On behalf of myself and the people of New Zealand, I extend our condolences and solidarity to everyone affected by this attack.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar

“I am horrified by the deadly shooting in Sydney, Australia, during the Hanukkah celebrations. This attack is the result of two years of antisemitic violence on the streets of Australia.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic attack at Bondi Beach. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

“Europe stands with Australians and the Jewish community everywhere in the world. We are united against violence, antisemitism, and hatred,” she said.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares

“I am appalled by the terrorist attack against the Jewish community in Australia. I express my solidarity with the victims, their loved ones, and with the people and government of Australia.

“There is no place for hatred, antisemitism, or violence in our societies.”

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre

“I am shocked by the horrific attack during the Jewish Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach in Australia. I strongly condemn this despicable terrorist act.

“I extend my deepest condolences to all those affected by today’s tragic attack.”

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson

“I am horrified by the attack targeting the Jewish community in Sydney. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We must stand together to prevent the spread of antisemitism.”

French President Emmanuel Macron

Condemning the gun attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, he said, “France will continue to fight relentlessly against antisemitism.”
