Darwin, 27 December: A powerful snowstorm has struck several states across the United States, forcing the cancellation or delay of thousands of flights. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in New York and New Jersey due to the worsening conditions.
According to CBS News on Saturday (December 27), New York is forecast to receive one of the heaviest snowfalls in its history. The accumulation of snow has become a major concern for the city.
The New York area could receive between 2 to 5 inches of snow. Similar conditions are expected in Long Island and northern New Jersey. Meanwhile, eastern Long Island and Connecticut may experience heavier snowfall ranging from 5 to 10 inches.
Heavy snowfall has significantly reduced visibility, making safe travel nearly impossible. Slippery roads have further increased the risk for drivers.
New York’s Emergency Management Department has issued several advisories, warning that roads will become extremely slick. Drivers have been urged to reduce speed, especially during the evening and nighttime hours.
In New Jersey, conditions deteriorated rapidly due to the snowstorm, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency. Roads across the state have been covered in ice, and freezing rain has made daily life increasingly difficult for residents.
On Friday alone, at least 1,000 flights were canceled and around 4,000 flights were delayed. The disruption comes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, as millions of people typically travel by air during the Christmas season. However, the snowstorm has left many travelers stranded and facing significant difficulties.
