PALM BEACH, FL : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in the United States for a pivotal 1:00 PM ET meeting with President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The meeting comes at a critical juncture as Kyiv endures a massive wave of Russian missile and drone strikes, serving as a lethal backdrop to accelerated diplomatic efforts.
The discussion is centered on a refined 20-point peace proposal—a streamlined version of Trump’s original 28-point plan. US officials have indicated that 90% of the terms have been settled, a figure Zelenskyy affirmed on Friday.
“It isn’t easy… but nevertheless, we must bring the desired result closer with every such meeting,” Zelenskyy stated ahead of the talks.
The meeting follows intensive negotiations led by Steve Witkoff, Trump’s foreign envoy, and Jared Kushner. Trump’s willingness to interrupt his holiday break is seen by many as a signal that the negotiations have reached an advanced, “executable” stage.
In a significant shift, Zelenskyy is no longer ruling out land concessions entirely. He has proposed that any peace plan involving changes to Ukraine’s borders be put to a national referendum, as required by the Ukrainian constitution, provided that Russia agrees to an immediate and verifiable ceasefire.
While the “platinum standard” of US security guarantees is on the table, Moscow remains the wildcard. Vladimir Putin recently reiterated that Russia will achieve its aims by “military means” if Kyiv does not accept its maximalist demands.
