Darwin, 01 January:

Australia became one of the first countries in the world to welcome 2026, as millions gathered across the nation to bid farewell to 2025 with a mix of solemn remembrance and dazzling celebration.

In Sydney, the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House were illuminated by thunderous fireworks as the clock struck midnight on 1 January 2026.

Yet this year’s celebrations carried a deeper emotional tone following the deadly Bondi Beach attack in mid-December, where gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah event, killing 15 people.

An hour before midnight, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was bathed in white light, with a menorah symbol projected onto its arches.

Revelers observed a minute of silence, lighting torches and mobile phone flashlights in tribute to the victims. As the silence ended, a white dove and the words “Peace” and “Unity” lit up the harbour, drawing applause and quiet reflection from the crowd.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in his New Year message, assured Australians that public safety remained a top priority.

“Bondi has shown us the very best of the Australian spirit — courage, compassion and unity,” he said.

Security was visibly heightened across Sydney, with more than 2,500 police officers deployed, some carrying long firearms — a first for the annual New Year’s Eve event. Despite the somber undertone, thousands gathered at vantage points around the harbour. An estimated 10,000 people packed Mrs Macquarie’s Chair alone to witness the world-famous fireworks display.
Elsewhere across the country, celebrations continued despite challenging weather.

In Brisbane, heavy rain and lightning failed to deter around 90,000 people who lined the Brisbane River to watch fireworks.

Attendees later took shelter as sudden downpours briefly disrupted the festivities, which also featured two drone shows, a new addition to this year’s program.

“We survived the storm — I think everything will be fine after this,” said visitor Lorenz Eiv from Germany, speaking to ABC News Australia.
In Canberra, severe thunderstorms threatened to cancel the fireworks, but the clouds eventually cleared, allowing nearly 50,000 people to enjoy what organizers described as the city’s “biggest show ever” over Lake Burley Griffin.

Meanwhile, Hobart welcomed thousands of food lovers to its popular “Taste of Summer” festival, capped off with fireworks over the waterfront.
For many Australians, the night symbolized both remembrance and renewal.

“We’ve just graduated, so this feels like the beginning of a new chapter,” said Kiara Tiver.

“New year, new me,” added Jack Wheeler.

As one of the world’s easternmost nations near the International Date Line, Australia — particularly Sydney — traditionally welcomes the New Year ahead of most of the globe, once again placing the country at the forefront of global celebrations as 2026 begins.
