At least 10 people have been killed in a shooting at a high school and a nearby residence in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. The attack occurred at around 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the name of the high school is Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. After the attack, the RCMP recovered six নিহত victims from the scene and rescued about 30 others in injured condition.
The attacker was also found dead at the scene. The RCMP believes the suspect “ended his own life.”
After the injured were taken to the hospital, four more people died there. Among the injured, two remain in critical condition due to severe injuries. The remaining 25 were released after receiving primary treatment.
The RCMP also recovered two bodies from a house near the school. Preliminary investigations suggest that those নিহত individuals may be connected to the school shooting. In a statement, the RCMP said nearby homes and residential areas were searched to determine whether there were additional victims.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have not released the identity of the attacker. Police have also not provided any information about the motive behind the attack. However, an emergency alert was issued for Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and the surrounding area following the incident, which was lifted at 5:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves students from Grade 7 to Grade 12 and has a total enrollment of 175 students. The school authorities have announced that the school will remain closed for one week to allow the community to recover from the tragedy and to mourn the victims.
