Darwin, 09 March: Iran has announced Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader. He is the second child of the former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On Sunday night, Iran’s state media reported that Mojtaba Khamenei has been chosen as the new Supreme Leader.

The country’s 88‑member Assembly of Experts elects the Supreme Leader. In the most recent vote, they selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the next highest authority.

The Assembly of Experts has called on everyone to support the new leader.

On February 28, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint attack by the United States and Israel, along with his wife and daughter. Several other senior military officials also lost their lives in that attack.

According to Al Jazeera, Mojtaba has never held any official government position nor participated in any elections. However, during his father’s tenure as Supreme Leader, he had significant influence in Iran’s internal politics. He had developed close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Since his father became older, Mojtaba was widely seen as the next potential Supreme Leader. The 56‑year‑old himself never publicly discussed this possibility.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said two days ago that if Mojtaba becomes Supreme Leader, it would not be acceptable to them. Trump told multiple media outlets that Iran’s leader must be directly elected by the people.

Despite Trump’s remarks, Iran’s Assembly of Experts chose Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son as the new Supreme Leader.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared its loyalty to the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. They have extended their congratulations to the new leader.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guard said, “We will remain loyal and sincere to Mojtaba Khamenei for life. We are ready to implement whatever directives he gives.”

After his election as new leader, people took to the streets of Tehran in celebration. They welcomed him and urged not to bow before Israel and America.

Following his appointment, the IRGC fired missiles toward Israel under his orders. On those missiles was written “Labbayk Sayyed Mojtaba” — meaning “We are ready at your call, Mojtaba.”
