Proposal in U.S. Congress Seeking Recognition of 1971 Bangladesh Genocide

Senate US

Darwin, 22 March : A new proposal has been introduced in the United States Congress calling for international recognition of the 1971 genocide carried out in Bangladesh.

The resolution was presented on Friday by Congressman Greg Landsman.

It highlights the হত্যাযজ্ঞ committed by the Pakistani military, including the killing of civilians, mass displacement, and widespread atrocities against women.

The proposal has been referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee for further review.

It also addresses the political discrimination faced by the people of then East Pakistan and calls for accountability for those involved, including collaborators who supported the Pakistani forces during the war.

Citing historical evidence such as reports by journalist Anthony Mascarenhas and the “Blood Telegram” sent by U.S. diplomat Archer Blood, the resolution argues that the military operation known as “Operation Searchlight” was a planned genocide.

The proposal urges the U.S. President to formally recognize the events of 1971 as genocide and crimes against humanity, ensure accountability, and preserve this history for future generations.
