U.S. Prepares for Potential Weeks-Long Ground Invasion in Iran

Darwin, 29 March: — The United States is reportedly preparing for a potential weeks-long ground operation in Iran, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate sharply.

According to a report by The Washington Post, thousands of U.S. troops have been positioned across the region, raising concerns about a new and more dangerous phase of the conflict.

Officials familiar with the matter বলেছেন that the planned operation would differ significantly from conventional ground invasions. Instead of large-scale troop advances, the strategy may rely on targeted raids conducted by special forces and artillery units inside Iranian territory.

Meanwhile, CBS News reports that more than 3,500 U.S. troops have already arrived in the Middle East. Among them is the advanced amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, carrying approximately 2,500 Marines. The vessel, part of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, enhances U.S. rapid-response and strike capabilities in the region.

The USS Tripoli, known as a “big-deck” amphibious warship, is equipped to deploy F-35 stealth fighter jets, Osprey aircraft, and other combat and transport platforms. In addition, the USS Boxer and other naval assets, along with additional Marine units, have also been deployed from San Diego.

A “New Phase” of the War

U.S. officials have warned that any ground operation could mark a “new phase” in the war—one that may prove more dangerous than the initial stages of the conflict. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said American troops could face heavy resistance, including drone attacks, missile strikes, and direct fire.

Despite the preparations, the White House has emphasized that no final decision has been made. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that military planning is part of standard defense readiness, allowing the president to respond to evolving situations. “Planning does not mean the president has made a decision to proceed with a ground invasion,” she said.

Strategic Target: Kharg Island

One of the possible targets under consideration is Kharg Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz. The island is a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports, accounting for roughly 90% of its crude shipments. Securing or disabling this facility could significantly impact Iran’s economic capacity and ensure safer maritime navigation through the strategically vital waterway.

Duration and Risks

Sources suggest that a potential ground campaign could last several weeks, though others warn it might extend for months depending on resistance and operational challenges.

Since the conflict began on February 28, at least 13 U.S. troops have been killed and nearly 300 injured, highlighting the growing human cost of the الحرب.

Broader Implications

The الأزمة continues to disrupt global trade and energy markets, particularly due to instability around the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that any escalation involving ground operations could further destabilize the region and trigger wider economic and security consequences.
