Russian Military Aircraft Crashes in Crimea, 29 Death

Darwin, 01 April: At least 29 people have been killed after a Russian military transport aircraft crashed in Crimea. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, with Russian news agencies reporting the development early Wednesday, citing the country’s defense ministry.

According to a report by The Guardian, the Antonov An-26 aircraft lost communication while on a scheduled flight. The crash took place at around 6:00 p.m. local time.

Russian news agency TASS reported that the aircraft slammed into a mountainous cliff in the Crimean Peninsula. All 29 people on board—including 23 passengers and 6 crew members—were killed. No survivors have been found. However, the total number of people originally on board has not been independently confirmed.

Preliminary reports suggest that a technical malfunction may have caused the crash.

Crimea, located along the Black Sea, was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, a move that remains internationally disputed.

The Antonov An-26, first introduced in the 1960s, has been widely used for both military and civilian cargo transport. However, the aircraft model has been involved in several deadly incidents over the past decade.

In 2022, an An-26 crashed during a technical flight in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, killing one person. In 2020, a training flight crash in northeastern Ukraine left 27 people dead, with only one survivor. That same year, another crash in South Sudan killed eight people, while a 2017 landing accident in Ivory Coast resulted in four fatalities.
