Kamchatka, Russia – July 20, 2025: A tsunami warning was briefly issued for Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula after two powerful undersea earthquakes struck off the eastern coast early Sunday.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the strongest quake measured magnitude 7.4 and occurred at a depth of 20 kilometres, about 144 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city with a population of around 180,000.
Just minutes earlier, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded in the same area.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued warnings for both Russia and Hawaii, which have since been cancelled as the threat was reassessed.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) also reported the twin quakes near the Kamchatka coast, measuring them at 6.6 and 6.7 magnitude with both occurring at a shallower depth of 10 kilometres.
No casualties or major damage have been reported as of now. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, and residents in the region have been advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
Historical records show that the region is no stranger to major seismic activity. On November 4, 1952, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Kamchatka generated 9.1-metre waves in Hawaii, though no deaths were reported.
