Kelvinhaugh, QLD: Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed and burst into flames in Kelvinhaugh, near Toowoomba, on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Oakey Cooyar Road shortly after 3:00pm, where the aircraft had reportedly caught fire on impact.

Queensland Police Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Forbes said the scene was described as a “very large fireball” following the crash.

“The property owner was home at the time, heard a loud explosion, and was able to contact emergency services,” Sgt Forbes told the media. “The two occupants of the plane died on impact.”

The aircraft, identified as a commercial plane operating a routine flight, had previously landed in Warwick before continuing its journey toward the Toowoomba region.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed three fire crews were dispatched to the site to contain and extinguish the blaze.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident in collaboration with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which has confirmed it will send a team of investigators to the crash site.

Further details, including the identity of the victims and the cause of the crash, are yet to be confirmed.
