Darwin, September 8 — After losing the first two matches and conceding the series early, England bounced back in spectacular fashion in the third ODI against South Africa, securing the biggest win by runs in the history of One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Playing at Southampton, the Harry Brook-led England side defeated South Africa by a staggering 342 runs — surpassing the previous record set by India in 2023 when they beat Sri Lanka by 317 runs.
Batting first, England posted a mammoth 414 for 5 in 50 overs. Jacob Bethell and Joe Root both scored centuries. Bethell, who scored his maiden international hundred, was dismissed for 110 runs off 102 balls, hitting 13 fours and three sixes.
Joe Root made a composed 100 off 96 balls, featuring six boundaries. Opener Jamie Smith added 62 from 48 deliveries, while Jos Buttler remained unbeaten on 62 off just 32 balls.
In reply, South Africa collapsed under pressure early in the innings and were bowled out for just 72 runs — unable to recover from the top-order collapse. Corbin Bosch top-scored with 20, followed by Keshav Maharaj (17) and Tristan Stubbs (10). No other batter reached double digits.
For England, Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs. Adil Rashid took 3 wickets, while Brydon Carse claimed 2.
This dominant win serves as a statement performance by England, turning the tide after a disappointing start to the series.
