Mohan Chandra Regmi, Executive Director of Civil Hospital, confirmed one more death while undergoing treatment, though the victim’s identity has not yet been released. Dozens of other injured protesters have been admitted to Civil Hospital, Everest Hospital, and nearby medical facilities.
The rally was organized in Maitighar on Monday by a group called Hami Nepal, largely joined by students. The protest was called against government corruption and the decision to ban 26 unregistered social media platforms. Among those banned are Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and other popular platforms.
Recently, hashtags like #NepoKid and #NepoBabies have become symbols of resistance both online and offline. After viral videos compared the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children to the struggles of ordinary Nepalis, youth anger intensified.
Tensions escalated when protesters defied restrictions in no-go zones and began marching towards the Parliament building. After demonstrators broke through barricades, police used water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition to disperse the crowd. Protesters retaliated by throwing tree branches and water bottles while chanting anti-government slogans.
As violence spread, the local administration imposed a curfew across key parts of the capital, including New Baneshwor. The curfew will remain in effect from 12:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Areas under curfew include New Baneshwor Chowk to Everest Hotel, Minbhawan, Tinkune Chowk, Iplex Mall, and Shankhamul Bridge.
Additionally, security has been tightened around sensitive areas such as the President’s residence Shital Niwas, the Prime Minister’s residence Baluwatar, and Singha Durbar. During curfew hours, all types of gatherings, rallies, or movement are strictly prohibited.
