Darwin, 10 june: Former world champions Spain ended their preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup with an impressive win in their final warm-up match.

In a match played this morning at Cuauhtémoc Stadium in Puebla, Mexico, Spain defeated Peru 3-1. In their previous friendly, Spain had been held to a 1-1 draw by Iraq.

Spain took the lead as early as the second minute when Mikel Oyarzabal scored with a stunning strike from outside Peru’s penalty area.

Despite going ahead, Spain continued to press for more goals. Their efforts paid off in the 32nd minute when they doubled their advantage. Pedri found the net after meeting a cross from Ferran Torres. Spain went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The Spaniards extended their lead shortly after the break. In the 55th minute, Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese accidentally turned Yeremy Pino’s cross into his own net, giving Spain a 3-0 advantage through an own goal.

Peru reduced the deficit 11 minutes later. Jairo Vélez received a pass outside the box and scored to make it 3-1. No further goals were scored, and Spain secured a convincing victory.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said the win over Peru would provide his team with extra confidence ahead of the World Cup.

“There is a big difference between friendly matches and World Cup matches. But there is a special advantage in going into the tournament on the back of a victory. It keeps everyone in the squad confident. We have learned a lot from these preparation matches, and now it is time to correct our mistakes. I hope the boys will perform well in the World Cup,” he said.

The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Spain have been drawn in Group H alongside tournament newcomers Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. La Roja will begin their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15.
