Darwin, September 14— A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Russia’s eastern coastal Kamchatka Peninsula early Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), as reported by NBC News.
The USGS stated that the epicenter of the quake was located approximately 69.3 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city in Kamchatka. The earthquake occurred at a depth of around 39 kilometers.
No immediate reports of major damage or casualties have been received so far.
Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of a potential tsunami risk stemming from the earthquake. However, the warning was later lifted, and the center confirmed on its website that there was no tsunami threat or advisory in effect.
Notably, this is not the first time Kamchatka has experienced such seismic activity in recent months. On July 20, at least five powerful earthquakes hit the Kamchatka Peninsula — the strongest of which also measured 7.4 in magnitude. Just days later, the same region was struck by an even more intense 8.8-magnitude quake, prompting tsunami alerts in Japan, the United States, and Russia.
