Keegan Bradley: Ryder Cup Defeat at Bethpage Will Haunt Me ‘Forever’

Bradley will never get over US Ryder Cup defeat

NEW YORK – Former Team USA Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley has described the crushing defeat to Europe at Bethpage as “one of the toughest times” of his life, admitting he fears he will “never get over” the loss.

In his first news conference since the September tournament, the 39-year-old—who was the youngest US captain since 1963—reflected on the European team’s 15-13 victory on American soil.

“Since Bethpage, this has been one of the toughest times in my life,” Bradley stated. “You win, it’s glory for a lifetime – but I didn’t and I’m going to have to sit with this for the rest of my life.”

He added, powerfully: “There’s no part of me that thinks I’ll ever get over this. This event has been so brutal to me. I’ll forever wonder and wish.”

Bradley’s captaincy was scrutinized after Europe established a dominant position early on. The opening two days saw the Europeans build an almost insurmountable 11½-4½ lead—the largest going into the final day in modern Ryder Cup history—after a 5½-2½ lead on Day One. “You put so much into it, and you have all this planning, and the first two days went as poorly as we could have ever thought,” Bradley confessed.

Despite a dramatic Sunday comeback attempt, with the hosts winning 8½ of the 12 singles matches, the deficit was too large to overcome, allowing Europe to become the first visiting team to win since 2012.

Bradley, who has now lost three Ryder Cups as a player and captain (2012, 2014, and 2024), faced questions regarding his decision to forgo a player-captain role. He was expected to play but had a “change of heart” earlier this year.

“The first practice day, I was out on the tee, and I was watching the guys walk down the fairway all together, and I said to myself ‘I wish I was playing – that’s what it’s all about. I’m missing out’,” he admitted.

However, Bradley ultimately defended his decision to omit himself from selection, saying he was “physically exhausted” by the second day of the match and “just didn’t think I could do both jobs.”

Despite the emotional toll, Bradley confirmed he will continue to make himself available for future Ryder Cup editions. The next tournament is scheduled for Adare Manor in Ireland from September 17-19, 2027.
