The ‘1989 Ashes’ Moment: Gilchrist Declares Cameron Green Set for Steve Waugh-Like Breakthrough

Cricket legend Adam Gilchrist has amplified the pressure on young Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, declaring that the upcoming Ashes series could be the turning point that defines his career, much like the 1989 tour of England was for a then-struggling Steve Waugh.

Gilchrist made the bold prediction on Fox Cricket, stating: “This series… for Cam Green is Steve Waugh’s 1989 Ashes.”

Green’s current statistics bear a striking resemblance to Waugh’s record before his breakout series. After 32 Tests, Green averages 34.02 with one century. In 1989, Waugh arrived in England averaging 30.52 without a century from 26 Tests.

Waugh famously used that series to transform his career, plundering 506 runs at an average of 126.50, including two centuries and going three innings without being dismissed. That series launched a career that ended with over 10,000 runs and 32 centuries.

Gilchrist believes Green is at the same crossroads: “This is his opportunity and this is his time, both with bat, primarily, but with ball as well… ‘I am the future of this Australian Test cricket team, build the team around me’.”

The position Green will occupy in the batting order remains uncertain, depending largely on whether his back surgery recovery allows him to bowl in the First Test in Perth on November 21.

He likely bats at No. 6, replacing Beau Webster, with Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3.

Selectors might move Green to No. 3, Labuschagne opens, and Webster stays at No. 6.

Former batsman Mark Waugh added his view on Green’s evolving role, suggesting that the constant switching between No. 3, No. 4, No. 6, and No. 7 is detrimental. “I think four is the perfect number for him,” Waugh said. “I don’t think it’s helping him [the chopping and changing].”
