Australia Calls for Diplomatic Solution as Venezuela Crisis Deepens

Darwin, 05 January: Australia has urged a diplomatic resolution to the escalating crisis in Venezuela following a dramatic United States operation that led to the capture and detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Australian government was closely monitoring developments and called on all parties to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further destabilisation in the region.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Sunday, Albanese reiterated Australia’s long-standing concerns over the situation in Venezuela.
“Australia has long held concerns about Venezuela, including the need to respect democratic principles, human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Albanese said.
“We continue to support international law and a peaceful, democratic transition in Venezuela that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.”

Assistant Health Minister Rebecca White confirmed that Australia had not been involved in, nor consulted on, what she described as a “unilateral decision” by the United States to seize and detain Maduro and his wife during an early-morning raid. The pair were subsequently flown to New York to face criminal charges.

Speaking to reporters in Tasmania, White said Australia was working with international partners to establish the full details of Washington’s surprise move and was seeking clarification from the US administration “through appropriate channels.”

She declined to directly address questions about whether the operation could constitute a breach of international law or set a dangerous precedent with broader global implications, including emboldening China’s ambitions regarding Taiwan or the South China Sea. However, she reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to upholding international legal norms.

“We remain committed to international law and to upholding those norms,” White said.

Australia’s opposition Coalition welcomed Maduro’s detention, with Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and foreign affairs spokeswoman Senator Michaelia Cash describing him as an “illegitimate president.” In a joint statement, they accused Maduro of presiding over years of repression, systemic human rights abuses, corruption and the suppression of democratic freedoms.

“Under his rule, Venezuela has endured immense suffering, forcing millions to flee the country,” the statement said.

“The Venezuelan people deserve the opportunity to restore their sovereignty through a peaceful return to democracy, via genuinely free and fair elections conducted without intimidation or violence and under credible international scrutiny.”

In contrast, the Greens strongly condemned the US action, labelling it an attack on Venezuela and describing the detention of Maduro and his wife as “kidnapping.”

Greens foreign affairs spokesperson Senator David Shoebridge warned that the operation represented a serious violation of international law and risked encouraging global lawlessness.

“Lawlessness without consequences empowers dictators, tyrants and aggressors,” Shoebridge said, warning the move could provide justification for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine and potential Chinese aggression toward Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has updated its travel advice for Venezuela, urging Australians in the country to be prepared to shelter in place with essential supplies and to consider leaving if it is safe to do so.
