A Deal Is Preferable to Extending the Ceasefire: Trump

Darwin, 08 January: A group within Australia’s ruling Labor Party, known as Labor Friends of Palestine, has urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to withdraw the official invitation extended to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, citing concerns over Israel’s military actions in Gaza and alleged violations of international law.
In a letter to the prime minister, the group argued that President Herzog has publicly supported Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and should not be welcomed on an official visit while the conflict continues.
The group further claimed that Herzog’s statements amount to the incitement of genocide, calling on Australian authorities to consider legal scrutiny — a move legal experts say is unlikely due to head-of-state immunity and the absence of any arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The issue has exposed divisions within Australia’s political and social landscape, including differing views inside the Jewish community. While some smaller Jewish organisations have expressed concern that Herzog’s visit could deepen social tensions and fuel racism, several prominent Jewish leaders and pro-Israel groups have defended the invitation.
They argue the visit would serve as a gesture of solidarity, particularly following the deadly attack at Bondi Beach, and would help reinforce diplomatic ties between Australia and Israel.
Critics of the visit maintain that hosting Herzog risks legitimising actions that have led to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while supporters insist the engagement is diplomatic in nature and should not be conflated with endorsement of military policy.
Despite mounting internal pressure, the Australian government has so far shown no indication of rescinding the invitation. President Herzog’s visit remains scheduled for early 2026, and officials have not announced any change to the program.
