Darwin, 17 February:
Free condoms distributed to athletes at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics have reportedly run out within just three days of the Games beginning.
According to international media reports, approximately 10,000 condoms were made available to athletes in the Olympic Village. However, the supply was quickly exhausted, prompting organizers to arrange additional stock. It remains unclear when the new supply will arrive.
The number distributed at this year’s Winter Games is significantly lower than at recent Summer Olympics. For example, around 300,000 condoms were provided during the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where the number of participating athletes was considerably higher.
The tradition of distributing free condoms at the Olympic Games dates back to the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The initiative was introduced to promote safe sex and raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections among athletes.
Officials have not indicated whether the initial supply shortage will impact further distributions during the remainder of the Games.
