Darwin, 28 March: The world’s most prestigious film awards, the Oscars, will no longer be held in Hollywood starting in 2029, organizers have announced. The news was reported by AFP.
In a statement on Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the ceremony will continue to take place at the Dolby Theatre through 2028. From 2029 onward, the event will be relocated to the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
The new venue, Peacock Theater, is part of the L.A. Live complex, located next to the Crypto.com Arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said future ceremonies, starting with the 101st Oscars, will be expanded and centered around L.A. Live.
Kramer said the Academy looks forward to working closely with AEG, the venue’s owner, on upcoming. Howell Taylor added that the goal is to transform L.A. Live into an ideal, where both in-person attendees and global audiences can fully engage with the celebration.
As part of the move, organizers have signed a 10-year deal with AEG. They also plan to move away from traditional U.S. television broadcasting and stream the programme globally via YouTube in the future.
The Dolby Theatre has long been associated with the Oscars and is located near the Roosevelt Hotel, where the first Academy Awards were held in 1929. Although closely tied to Hollywood, the Oscars have previously been held at various venues across Los Angeles, including Santa Monica during much of the 1960s.
At this year’s ceremony on March 15, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another—a gripping story involving leftist revolutionaries, white supremacists, and migrant detention centers—won Best Picture.
