France’s junior defense minister, Alice Rufo, stated, “I would like to remind you what NATO actually is. It is a military alliance tied to the security of the Euro-Atlantic region. It was not created to conduct operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Any such action there would violate international law.”
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Since then, Iran has nearly blocked the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical routes for global energy supply.
Donald Trump had called on allied nations to send warships to reopen the waterway. However, they did not respond to his request. As a result, the United States is increasingly viewing Europe as an unreliable defense partner.
Following the lack of response, Trump and other senior U.S. officials have been criticizing NATO.
In an interview published Wednesday by The Telegraph, Trump said he is seriously considering withdrawing from the alliance due to its failure to join the war against Iran. Earlier, he had also mocked NATO allies as “cowards.”
