Darwin, 01 May : A man has been arrested in Alice Springs on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old girl, leading to violent clashes in the area overnight.
According to Northern Territory Police, the girl’s body was discovered just before noon on Thursday. Following local Indigenous customs, the child is now referred to as Kumanjai Little Baby, a name in honor of her spirit. The girl, who went missing over the weekend, is believed to have been taken by a man named Jefferson Lewis.
At 10:32 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), the police made a breakthrough announcement, which they had promised the community:
“Earlier, Northern Territory Police identified and arrested Jefferson Lewis from a residence in Alice Springs,”
they stated in a brief. Further details would be provided the following morning.
The police had been focused solely on Lewis in connection with the child’s suspected abduction. As news of the arrest spread, large crowds gathered outside the Alice Springs Hospital, where it was believed Lewis was receiving medical treatment.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the crowd, chanting “They’ve got him,” clashed with police and demanded that Lewis be handed over to the community for judgment.
As tensions escalated, officers reportedly used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, with reports of stones being thrown at police cars and fires burning in the streets.
“A Little Queen” – Family in Mourning
In a statement issued Thursday afternoon, the child’s mother and brother expressed deep grief at her loss. “Kumanjai Little Baby, [your brother] Ramsia and I miss you dearly and love you,” they said. “I know you are in heaven with the rest of our family, Jesus, and the Holy Trinity. We will one day see you again, we dedicate our lives to Jesus. Life without you will be so hard. Ramsia wants to say that when he meets you in heaven, he will give you the biggest hug ever.”
The girl’s grandfather, Robin Granites, showed reporters where his granddaughter had slept the night she went missing. “It’s so hard for me to say this, but she was our little queen, a little girl, a little lady,” he said.
Her aunt, Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, described the incident as “devastating” in a statement Thursday night. “This loss is deeply felt as part of a much larger family,” Price said. “This is the worst outcome, and no child should ever be put in danger.”
Police made it clear that this is a serious criminal investigation, and they are committed to finding those responsible. “We must focus on supporting the family at this time and let the police do their work,” they said.
The Discovery of the Body and the Investigation
Police found the child’s body about 5 kilometers south of the Old Timers Community Camp. Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Malley said Thursday morning that the primary focus of investigators was to locate Jefferson Lewis.
“I am telling Jefferson Lewis’ family that we believe he is responsible for the death of this child,” Malley said. “Do not help him, bring him to the police, and we will take care of him.”
Commissioner of Police Martin Dol described the discovery of the girl’s body as “the worst possible outcome.” “This is an extremely concerning incident,” Dol stated.
Dol confirmed that the police had formally notified the family of the child’s death. He said that officials could not yet provide answers regarding the cause of death or the time of death. A post-mortem is expected to take place soon, which will be an important step in determining these details.
As the criminal investigation continues, a coronial inquiry has also begun. This will place limitations on what can be publicly disclosed at this time. Dol described the news as “devastating” for the family, the first responders, the Alice Springs community, and all those across Australia who have been deeply affected by the tragedy.
Search Efforts and Community Support
The level of support from the community has been overwhelming. The child went missing early on Sunday, around 1:30 AM. On Wednesday, police reported that during the search, they found some clothing near the riverbank close to the Old Timers Camp. Malley confirmed that the items were taken to Darwin for analysis.
“We have found two DNA profiles from the clothing… one, as expected, belongs to the little girl, and the other belongs to Jefferson Lewis,” Malley said.
In an emotional statement Thursday, Northern Territory Chief Minister Leah Finocchiaro expressed her “sincere and heartfelt condolences” to the child’s mother over the phone.
“We are focused on a grieving family, a grieving town, and a grieving Northern Territory at this time,” Finocchiaro said. “As our police have stated, we are now focused on finding the person responsible and bringing them to justice.”
Finocchiaro also took the opportunity to thank the volunteers who assisted in the search effort. “Almost 200 people worked tirelessly day and night to find this beautiful little girl,” she said. “For five days, every Territorian held their breath, waiting for the moment when it would be announced that she was found safe and well. That news didn’t come, and it can be said that everyone is deeply devastated by the loss. Our deepest sympathy goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy, and I thank everyone who searched through bushes, long grass, and up mountains to help.”
Finocchiaro expressed her gratitude to the police and emergency service workers for their exceptional efforts in the search and now in bringing the criminal to justice.
“I encourage the Alice Springs community to stand by each other in this devastating time,” she said. “As a mother, as a member of our society, these dark times affect everyone, and the pain is real.
I have also spoken with our colleague Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who is the girl’s aunt. Through the days and weeks ahead, we, as Territorians, will remain united as always. Our condolences and prayers are with everyone during this incredibly difficult time.”
