Darwin, 15 May: Having already retired from international T20 cricket, Virat Kohli continues to show just how dominant he remains in the format through the Indian Premier League (IPL).
On Wednesday in Raipur, Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets. Chasing the target, Kohli played a match-winning unbeaten innings of 105 off 60 balls.
With this century, the RCB opener reached several milestones and broke multiple records, earning the Player of the Match award.
Kohli now holds the record for the fastest 14,000 runs in T20 cricket, achieving the feat in just 409 innings.
In doing so, he surpassed former West Indies batter Chris Gayle, who reached the milestone in 423 innings.
Apart from Kohli and Gayle, only four other players have crossed 14,000 T20 runs—David Warner (431 innings), Jos Buttler (468), Alex Hales (505), and Kieron Pollard (633).
This was Kohli’s ninth IPL century, extending his record as the player with the most centuries in IPL history. Overall, it was his 10th T20 century, placing him fourth on the all-time list.
Against Kolkata Knight Riders, Kohli also registered his highest number of centuries against a single IPL opponent for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, taking his tally against them to two. Until now, he had been tied with Gayle in this regard.
He already held the record for most runs by a player against a single IPL team, with 1,172 runs against Delhi Capitals. He has now extended that record further, reaching 1,174 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Kohli also equalled Jos Buttler in having the most centuries against two different IPL teams, with both players now having two centuries each against multiple opponents.
Among Indian players in the IPL, Kohli has also equalled Rohit Sharma’s record for the most Player of the Match awards, with both having won it 21 times.
With Kohli’s record-breaking performance, Royal Challengers Bengaluru moved to the top of the table, collecting 16 points from 12 matches.
