Darwin, 27 June : A heartbreaking story has emerged from earthquake-devastated Venezuela, where a mother lost her life while trying to save her young daughter. The deceased woman, Andrea, was the wife of Venezuelan footballer Héctor Bello.
In an emotional post on Instagram, Bello expressed his grief, saying he will one day tell his daughter how her mother sacrificed her life to protect her. He wrote that Andrea held their child close until her final moments, ultimately giving her life to save her.
Two powerful earthquakes struck areas near the capital Caracas on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and heavy casualties. According to the latest reports, at least 920 people have been killed and more than 3,000 injured. Rescue operations are ongoing as many people are still feared trapped under rubble.
Bello has shared multiple updates, stating that he is currently in Caracas and that his young daughter is receiving hospital treatment. On Friday night (June 26), he confirmed that both his daughter and her aunt are alive and in stable condition, though they will need to remain under medical care for a few more days.
Unable to come to terms with his wife’s death, Bello wrote in another Instagram story that he struggles to explain to his daughter how she was saved at the cost of her mother’s life. He also expressed regret that he was not present during the incident and could not do anything to help.
Local football media outlet Cumaná of Champions reported that Andrea’s body was recovered from the rubble after the building collapse. Her daughter miraculously survived the incident. The news was also confirmed by the Spanish-language U.S. media outlet Univision.
Meanwhile, identification of victims continues days after the disaster, along with ongoing search operations for the missing. Several members of the sports community are among the dead.
According to Venezuelan football clubs and the national football federation, at least two footballers also died in the earthquake. One of them was Razan Siza, an under-18 player for Caracas FC, who died at his home in La Guaira along with family members. The club paid tribute to his cheerful personality, dedication, and friendly nature.
Another victim was footballer Víctor Palacios. His club, Sport Club San Agustín, said he made significant contributions to the academy. The Venezuelan Football Federation also confirmed his death and noted his previous involvement with Marítimo de La Guaira.
As Venezuela continues to mourn, rescue teams are still searching for survivors, with fears that the death toll could rise further. Amid the devastation, the story of Héctor Bello and his family has touched many—a mother’s final act of love and sacrifice to save her child.
