Darwin, 10 June : Bangladesh recorded a historic One-Day International (ODI) victory over Australia after 21 years, thanks to outstanding performances from both their batsmen and bowlers.

In the first match of the three-match ODI series, Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. The Tigers had previously stunned Australia with a five-wicket victory in Cardiff in 2005, but had not beaten the Australians in ODI cricket since then. Bangladesh have also defeated Australia once in Test cricket and four times in T20 Internationals.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh lost an early wicket in the second over. Openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan put on 10 runs before Saif was dismissed for 5 by Australian pacer Nathan Ellis.

Tanzid and number-three batter Najmul Hossain Shanto then built an excellent partnership that took Bangladesh past the 100-run mark. Tanzid brought up the seventh ODI half-century of his career before becoming Ellis’ second victim. He scored 54 off 44 balls, including seven fours and a six. It was his fourth fifty in seven ODIs this year.

After Tanzid’s dismissal at 106, Litton Das joined Shanto at the crease. Their 19-run partnership saw Shanto register his 12th ODI half-century.

Batting at number four, Litton failed to make an impact and was dismissed for just 7 by spinner Matt Renshaw.

Shanto looked set for a big score after reaching his fifty but was eventually dismissed for 67 off 86 balls, hitting nine fours and a six, becoming Renshaw’s second wicket.

With Bangladesh at 140 for 4, Towhid Hridoy and Mosaddek Hossain rebuilt the innings with a valuable 75-run partnership from 90 balls. Hridoy departed for 31 from 51 deliveries, while Mosaddek, who was playing his first ODI in more than three and a half years, continued to anchor the innings. After receiving a lifeline on 22, he went on to score his fourth ODI half-century.

Following Mosaddek’s fifty, captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam were dismissed for 3 and 5 respectively, leaving Bangladesh at 239 for 7 in the 45th over.

Mosaddek then shared an unbeaten 45-run stand with Taskin Ahmed for the eighth wicket from just 33 balls, helping Bangladesh post a competitive total of 284 for 8 in their 50 overs.

Playing the best innings of his ODI career, Mosaddek remained unbeaten on 86 off 70 balls, smashing seven fours and three sixes. Taskin contributed a quick 20 from 16 deliveries, including two fours and a six.

For Australia, Nathan Ellis claimed three wickets, while Liam Scott and Matt Renshaw took two wickets each.

Chasing 285, Australia suffered an immediate setback as Matthew Short was bowled by Taskin Ahmed with the very first ball of the innings. In the next over, Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for 1.

Cooper Connolly and captain Josh Inglis steadied the innings with a 49-run partnership for the third wicket. Nahid Rana broke the stand by dismissing Inglis for 19 in the 11th over.

After Australia slipped to 51 for 3, Connolly and Alex Carey added another 40 runs before spinner Mosaddek bowled Connolly for 35.

Following Connolly’s dismissal, Australia collapsed under the pressure of Nahid Rana’s pace and Mosaddek’s spin, losing their ninth wicket at 156 and staring at a heavy defeat.

However, Cameron Green and Adam Zampa offered some resistance with a 35-run partnership from 34 balls. Play was then halted due to thunder and rain, with Australia on 191 for 9 after 42.2 overs.

As the rain did not stop, Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method.

Mosaddek Hossain was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 86 runs and two wickets.

The second ODI of the series will be played in Mirpur on June 11.
