Darwin, 01 July : A three-year-old boy was rescued alive from beneath the rubble in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, on Tuesday, six days after a devastating earthquake struck the country, according to a Jordanian rescue team. Nearly 2,000 people have died in last week’s disaster.

Rescue footage shows emergency workers cheering with joy after finding the child alive. His survival has been described as nothing short of miraculous.

The news was reported by AFP from Caracas.

In a statement, Jordan’s Civil Defense said the child received first aid at the scene before being rushed to a hospital for further treatment.

Another video shows rescuers gently wiping the child’s face with tissues before wrapping him in a blanket and transporting him by ambulance.

According to experts, the first 72 hours after an earthquake are the most critical period for rescuing survivors trapped under collapsed buildings.

Jordan’s Civil Defense added that the child’s vital signs were stable and that local authorities had been informed of the rescue.

Last week, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the country. The disaster has been described as one of the deadliest earthquakes in Latin American history. Entire residential buildings collapsed, and thousands of people remain missing. Search-and-rescue operations are continuing in an effort to locate survivors trapped beneath the debris.

The La Guaira area, located north of Caracas, was almost completely devastated, with buildings destroyed throughout the region. Caracas also suffered extensive damage.

On Tuesday, Venezuelan Parliament President Jorge Rodríguez announced that 6,461 people have been rescued alive since the earthquakes.
