18 Killed in Massive Russian Airstrike on Kyiv

Darwin, 03 July : At least 18 people were killed and nearly 90 others injured after Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. A significant number of children were among the casualties, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The BBC reported that Russian missiles and drones struck several civilian locations, including an ambulance station, across Kyiv late Friday night.

The attack began just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of intelligence indicating that Russia was preparing a major assault on the capital.

As daylight broke, the full extent of the destruction became clear. Fires engulfed several buildings, including a hotel in central Kyiv, while burnt-out vehicles, damaged residential buildings, and debris littered streets across the city.

Journalists on the ground reported that Kyiv was rocked by repeated explosions throughout the night. In response to the tragedy, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims.

Moscow said the strike was retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia would continue increasing pressure on the Ukrainian government to achieve its military objectives.

Ukraine, however, rejected the Russian justification, accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure.

The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said Russian forces knowingly attacked residential areas, resulting in civilian deaths.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones during the overnight assault.

Although Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepted most of the incoming weapons, 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones penetrated the defenses, striking 33 separate locations across the capital and surrounding areas.

Following the attack, President Zelenskyy urged the United States to urgently grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot air defense missiles, aiming to strengthen the country’s ability to defend against future Russian strikes.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also called on Kyiv’s Western allies to move beyond words of condemnation and provide additional air defense systems without delay.

On the battlefield, despite months of relative stalemate, Russian forces have recently advanced toward the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka. Military analysts say capturing the city would significantly strengthen Russia’s position in its campaign to seize the entire Donbas region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian military commanders claim their forces have disrupted key Russian supply lines and recaptured several areas this year.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has taken control of nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.
